Why There's No Wrong Time to Visit Japan, Thailand & Singapore

So, you've missed the cherry blossoms in Japan this year. Congratulations.
You've also missed the crowds, the inflated hotel rates, and the experience of sharing Maruyama Park with approximately everyone on earth who owns a camera.
Japan is worth visiting in every season, and we'd make the case that most of them are more relaxed and just as rewarding. The blossom window is narrow and beautiful. Japan is worth the trip without it.

Japan Works in Every Season (Yes, Even Summer)
Summer: Go North When Tokyo Gets Hot
Summer in Japan often gets written off because Tokyo in August is hot and Kyoto is hotter. Both true. We've been there multiple times in summer and we will be back.
The move is to use the heat as permission to go north.
Hokkaido in July and August is mild, pastoral, and running on seafood pulled from cold water that morning. A few nights in the south and then a flight to Hakodate is not a compromise. It's a full trip.
The morning market in Hakodate runs on local economics, not tourist prices, and the uni alone is worth the flight north.
Consider: Summer in Hokkaido works best with local guidance. Search Hokkaido food and walking tours at Get Your Guide — look for anything mentioning Hakodate Morning Market or Sapporo food experiences.
Fall: When Japan Feels Like Itself
Fall is when the foliage takes over. It rivals New England and the Alps, crowds drop from their spring peak, and late October through November is one of our favorite times to be there.
The country feels like itself in a way it sometimes doesn't during peak season.
Winter: The KFC Christmas Tradition You Need to See
Winter is the one that surprises people.
Kevin and I have made Thanksgiving in Tokyo close to an annual tradition. The weather tracks San Francisco in December: no ice, no snow in the city, nothing that requires a parka.
What catches visitors off guard is how seriously Tokyo commits to Christmas. The decorating is significant.
Roppongi Celebrating Christmas - Louise Bourgois Sculpture Sitting Prominent
And then there's this: the most coveted Christmas dinner in the city is KFC. Not ironically. In 1974 someone had the idea, Japan decided it was a tradition, and now people reserve their Christmas buckets weeks in advance. Lines form. It is earnest, slightly absurd, and completely wonderful.
Cherry blossoms are great. They are also entirely optional. And you can see them in Washington D.C.; Bonn, Germany; Jin Hae, South Korea; Vancouver, Canada; Stockholm, Sweden and…and…and…
Thailand: Warm When Everywhere Else Isn't
Thailand is warm when everywhere else isn't. We start most people in Bangkok or Chiang Mai and then get them to the coast, away from the islands everyone already knows about.
Bangkok Deserves More Than a Transit Stop
Bangkok deserves more than a night or two in transit. The food alone makes the case.
If you're curious why the world's top chefs are opening restaurants in Bangkok instead of Paris or New York, we wrote about Bangkok's fine dining revolution — the city has become one of the most exciting culinary destinations on earth.
Islands That Still Feel Like Islands
From Bangkok, Koh Chang has a national park covering most of it and beaches that still feel like they belong to you. Koh Kood, a ferry ride away, goes further: fewer hotels, clearer water, quieter.
Thai islands await just about anytime of the year
When we want to get clients to an island that still feels like one, these are where we start.

One Note on Northern Thailand in Spring
Traditional field burns happen during a short window and air quality in Chiang Mai can take a hit. We've sent clients during that period without issue. Worth knowing if you're sensitive to air quality, and there's always somewhere else in Thailand that season.
Singapore: The City That Doesn't Care What Season It Is
Singapore is warm year-round. The summer months add humidity and afternoon rain, and most visitors barely notice because so much of what the city does well happens inside.
Gardens by the Bay: A Mountain Climate on the Equator
At Gardens by the Bay, the Cloud Forest dome maintains a cool, misty mountain climate and houses a 35-meter indoor waterfall. Walking in from a Singapore afternoon, the temperature drop is immediate, and the whole thing feels nothing like what you'd expect from a city sitting on the equator.
The Flower Dome next door is the world's largest air-conditioned greenhouse, with plant life from five continents, which sounds like a science fair project and turns out to be something else entirely.
Consider:Search Gardens by the Bay tickets and experiences at Get Your Guide — the skip-the-line options are worth it during busy periods.
The World's Best Cocktail Scene
Beyond the gardens: the cocktail bars and the restaurant tables that require some planning to get into don't care what the weather is doing outside.
Singapore has the finest cocktail scene in the world, and that's not a close call.

FAQ: Best Time to Visit Asia
What's the best month to visit Japan? November for fall foliage, December for winter illuminations and fewer crowds, or July-August if you head to Hokkaido for cooler temps and incredible seafood.
Is Thailand too hot in summer? Bangkok and central Thailand are hot year-round. The move is coastal areas with sea breezes or northern Thailand outside of the spring burning season (March-April).
Does Singapore have a rainy season? Singapore has afternoon rain throughout the year, but most of what makes the city worth visiting happens indoors or under cover. It's rarely a problem.
When should I avoid traveling to Asia? Chiang Mai in March-April (air quality), and cherry blossom season in Japan if you hate crowds and inflated prices. Otherwise, there's always somewhere in Asia that works.
The Bottom Line on Asia Travel Timing
We've planned trips to all three countries in every month of the year. There's always a version that works.
The question isn't "when is the best time to visit Asia?"
The real question is: where do you go in Asia based on when you can actually travel?
